The road in front of Jack's
Last Chance Gas and Museum of Curiosities runs long and hot and -- most of the time
-- as empty as the surrounding desert. But, as Jack tells a vacationing family, things
have a way of settling down where they'll be looked after. If something has a story to
tell, sooner or later, it'll find its way to Jack's.
What the old man doesn't tell them is that people, too, find their way to him. For three
members of the family, Jack's is more than a last chance for a fill-up -- it's their last
chance to rid themselves of an evil presence that has insinuated itself into the very core
of their lives.
As Jack tells the family the stories behind a diamond engagement ring, a dead plant, and a
black leather glove, he tries to make them see what is happening to them and show them how
they can help themselves.
With "Man Hunt," a science fiction story of two losers, Dorothy and Larry -- who
find each other while searching for what each of them hopes will turn out to be that
once-in-a-lifetime jackpot -- Jack explains how looks can be deceiving. What you see isn't
always what you get.
In the supernatural "Passing On," he tells how Margaret literally comes to grips
with her father's death. At the same time he tries to explain to the family how little our
bodies have to do with who and what we are.
Finally, there's "The Interrogation," the ironic tale of a man who enjoys his
work perhaps a little too much. Through it, Jack shows the three affected members of the
family there is a gray area between right and wrong, and how, even if what you are doing
is wrong, it's still possible to squeeze a little right out of it.
Jack succeeds in opening their eyes and forcing them to admit -- if only to themselves --
that something is very, very wrong -- but the evil has been with these three too long and
grown too strong. Jack has no choice but to put himself on the line to save them. In the
end, the family's "last chance" comes through for them, and there's a new
exhibit in Jack's museum.
